Mounting AMP to TJ tailgate? Question: Has anyone mounted an amp for their speakers to the inside of the tailgate on a TJ Wrangler?? I don't want to mount it under the seats or in the console and I would really prefer to keep it off of any part of the floor in-case of a rainstorm with the top down. I can easily build a waterproof box to mount the amp and crossovers in, but I'm not really sure how to attach it to the inside of the tailgate! Is it safe to drill holes into the tailgate (is there anything in there that could get messed up)? Is that metal strong enough to support the weight of an amp and box or would I have to do some external reinforcement? I guess mostly I just don't know how to attach the box solidly to the tailgate without messing anything up =) Thank you for any answers! 0||||||0 Answer: It really depends on how heavy the tailgate is but Jeeps were made with good sheetmetal, you should be fine. I'm always hesitant about drilling into metal though so if you can find an alternative to hook the box on it would be much better. Plus, if your top is off the big box with wires coming out of it won't only attract attention, but provoke theft as well. I'd go with the underseat thing, because it will be safer there because I don't think you jeep will end up flooded with water and under the seat is going to be more sheltered. How about under the dashboard, glovebox, center console, etc? I guess it all depends on how big your amp is |

12V DC from car enough to power a 1400W amp for loudspeakers? Question: I'm trying to have a tailgate, and I have loudspeakers that are powered by a 1400W amp. I wanted to buy a DC-AC converter for my car and plug my amp into it, but I'm not sure how much power my amp needs in order to generate enough wattage for the loudspeakers. I saw multiple different kinds of DC-AC converters ranging from 100W to 800W, how much do I need for the amp? The amp in question is here: http://www.zzounds.com/item--QSCRMX1450 Answer: 1400 watts is the power to the speakers. What you need is the power it requires from the AC power line. It will be printed on the amp somewhere, or in the documentation. At full power, this could be as much as 2000 watts. But it is related to the loudness of the sound and the efficiency of the speakers, and could average a tenth or less of that. I'd get an inverter rated at 1000 watts and see how the amp performs. If it is running at a full 1000 watts, note that that is a drain of about 100 amps from the car battery, which would drain the battery in about 30 minutes. Note that auto batteries are permanently damaged if they are fully discharged. Bruce: a tailgate is a strange american custom of having a party out of the tailgate of your station wagon or SUV. Usually prior to a football game in the parking lot. . |

Amp mounting help needed, mounting a amplifier in a truck so its completly hidden? Question: I have a 1977 chevy K5 blazer with the topper removed, I am wanting to add a amp and I wanted some ideas on where I can mount a amp so that it will be completely hidden, I was thinking in my tailgate with some plastic draped over it to protect it from rain. Has anyone tried this or think I will be ok doing this? Anyone else have any good amp mounting ideas for my kind of vehicle? Thank you for your time and answers P.s. The reason I want to hide it, is so it dosent get jacked...lol Answer: 1. amp must be safe from theft... 2. amp must be safe from heat... 3. amp must be safe from weather and moisture... If you were crafty you could formulate a locking metal enclosure.. [i.e. a coverted diamond plate tool box?] to encapsulate amplifier. Good luck! |

Kenwood amp quality? Direction sub should face in Jeep Wrangler? Question: I need an amp that will push ~400 rms at 4 ohms to a single 10" sub and there is a kenwood that fits the bill and the price is perfect. Are they a decent amp? The sub is a polk audio which is supposed to be fairly high quality so I want an amp that will supply clean power. Ideal price is around $200 or less on ebay. Also, this sub will be behind the rear seat in a Jeep Wrangler so I'm not really sure which way it should face, If it's forward there will be just a thin seat between the back of my head and the sub, but if it faces backward it will be just an inch from a solid metal tailgate.. not much room for sound to reflect back. I could do downward firing but I'd prefer to have the sub aimed in a way that it is still visible. Will the bass be over-powering if it is facing forward? Especially if I take the rear seat out quite often? I could go around $250 if the amp is really worth the money. Answer: kenwood is pretty good but for the sub the best thing to do is experiment with the placement and you can also face the sub toward the roof |

Car stereo wiring - using the regular wires AND the RCA outputs; what kind of amp? Question: Right now, I have a pioneer deck, with stock speakers (front 4 x 6's and rear 6 x 9's) and an amp and subs in the trunk. I would like to put some speakers in the trunk (for tailgating and whatnot), but I would also like to juice up/replace my rear speakers. Can I run my rear speakers, and my extra speakers in the trunk off of the rca outputs on the back of my deck? (I would just run my extra speakers as the front speakers) and if I do will I lose my front speakers? and if I wanted to use the same amp for four speakers (all 6 x 9's 100rms 300max) how big and what type of amp would I need? Answer: Assuming that your existing speakers are powered by the head units internal amp, you can use the front preamp outputs from the head unit and just add the 2 pairs of 6X9's in the trunk. Most 2-channel amps are stable at 2 ohms in stereo. The additional amp would need to output about 100-250 watts RMS per channel into 2 ohms. This one, Crutchfield's "house brand", outputs 250 watts RMS X 2 into 2 ohms: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_777M2250/Sound-Ordnance-M-2 250.html?tp=35757 This JVC outputs less power, but is an excellent buy at only $89.99: The power is adequate for 2 pairs of 6X9's. And JVC is CEA-2006 compliant, so you can be sure that it will deliver the rated power. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KSA4302/JVC-KS-AX4302.h tml?tp=35757 You'll need an 8 gauge amp wiring kit with RCA cables. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_575RFK8I/Rockford-Fosgate -RFK8i.html?o=p&search=amp+wiring+kit&ssi=0 If you are a first-time purchaser at Crutchfield you can get a $20 discount off a $200 order if you use a "friend referral code" such as mine, which is: p7sdj-hrx8q-9800g, plus free shipping. Oh!, I get a $20 merchandise credit too. |

Good songs with A LOT of bass? Question: I prefer rap, something that would appeal to a 17 year old. I have 2 Kenwood KFC-W3012 twelve inch subs and a 350 watt KAC-5204 amp with a sealed box. I'm possibly going to get an X1200M amp soon but for now, this is what I have. Everything is the exact same as I bought it, haven't tuned for lows or highs, give me some good songs? SUV so there's a lot of airspace between myself and the speakers. My car is one of the main vehicles at the school tailgates so give me some good songs to really blow the hatch off, and pump my friends up. Rap, preferably new or unknown stuff, with A LOT of bass. Is 800W continuous from a power inverter enough to power 2 loudspeakers? Question: Is this DC to AC power inverter - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4965459 a ble to power this amp - http://www.zzounds.com/item--QSCRMX1450 for 4 hours at an outdoor tailgate? I want the music to be somewhat loud, but it doesn't have to be blaring. I plan on keeping my car engine running, as an alternative to a power generator because I don't have one and they are expensive. If this doesn't work, what is the minimum power inverter I need to run the speakers without too many limitations? Answer: Can't answer from the data given unless you are planning on running the car engine to supply the 12 volts continuously. Can't run it off the car battery only While the Inverter says 800 watts and the amp 700 watts these are two different kinds of power - the latter being sound power, not input. And note that if the speakers are more than two ohms, the sound power is much less. The exact power usage will be determined by the volume anyway. And the sound volume will depend on the speakers Note that way down in the amp specs it says that at 1/8th power into 4 ohms (56.25 watts sound power) it uses 7 amps at 120 volts. If the inverter were 100% efficient (it's not) that means 840 watts input power. At 12 volts that is 70 amps. At lower efficiency, higher amps. That means that an ordinary 70 AH car battery will be dead before an hour is up if the motor is not running and you will damage the battery because car batteries don't like deep discharge. To safely run this combination with engine off for 2 hours, you are likely to need 160 AH deep discharge battery power. And as said, that depends on what "somewhat loud" means to you and what the speakers suck up. And note that you need really serious cables running from batteries to inverter at that power - 3 or 4 gauge, probably welding cable. |
